priory employment & skills

helps local people find work

Funded by the Black Country Consortium based in Dudley, Priory Employment & Skills have supported over 125 Sandwell residents since January 2012 to improve their employment opportunities. Working on a one to one basis with anyone seeking help, local people are supported by trained workers who help jobseekers design a CV, prepare for interviews, and learn how to use the internet to look for work. The project has helped over 3 people per month find work.

Joseph Clay, who attends one of the project outreach venues situated in Priory Family Centre, was recently made redundant from his job as a welder said “The project is very helpful in helping me to look for a job in a really friendly relaxed atmosphere“. Keith Wheeler a local resident who was also recently made redundant said “The support I’ve received helped me renew my C.V. because I haven’t needed one for so long. They helped me find a job using the internet.”

The popularity of the service has led to the establishment of additional outreach venues with staff from Priory Employment & Skills now offering free drop in sessions at the Millennium Centre in Friar Park, Charlemont Community Centre in West Bromwich, the Wesley Centre in Wednesbury, Harvills Hawthorn School and Hateley Heath Schools.

As well as support with finding work, jobseekers are able to access free UK Online courses which give people an introduction to using IT and making the most of the internet. Ted Cook one of the Employment Support Workers employed by Priory Employment and Skills was quick to point out the benefit to jobseekers of helping people improve their IT skills. “More and more employers advertise their jobs online now so it’s important that jobseekers understand how to find vacancies and apply for work using the internet. To do that they often need an electronic copy of their CV so we help all of our jobseekers to create one.”
